What is Temporary Lodging Allowance and when does it end?
Temporary Lodging and Allowance (TLA) is for DoD personnel arriving and departing Hawaii and is provided to partially reimburse a member for the more than normal expenses incurred while occupying temporary lodgings. Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) continues during the period a member receives TLA reimbursement.
Most of these hotels include free Internet and some free parking and meal vouchers for Military members on TLA.
Base Housing: If you are assigned base housing but either your HHG's aren't here or the house is not ready then your TLA will continue until base housing is available.
This is a challenging one. There are no Marriott "town suites" where you can do a short term, furnished rental, with kitchen, for $90 a day. That is not the case here it is much more challenging to find a short term, furnished, place at per diem rates.
Here are some facts about short term rentals:
Most are located in Waikiki
Most are hotels that cater to tourists
Most are pretty expensive
Some are less expensive in Kaneohe and Kapolei
Some accept pets under 25 lbs
Sublet.com has some furnished rentals
Renting a Home: Once you have the keys to your home then TLA ends. If you sign a lease, but the home is not available for 10 more days due to cleaning or old tenants moving out, then your TLA will continue until you can actually move in.
Assigned to Barracks: If you are assigned to on-post barracks you may not receive TLA at all if quarters are available when you show up.
Always confirm with your finance office prior to using your benefits as policies can change.
Here is a link to DoD site FAQ's regarding TLA.
The Inn at Schofield Barracks is the designated quarters for Military personnel stationed at Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield and Helemano Military Reservation. If space is not available, the Inn will issue a Certificate of Non-Availability (CNA), which enables you to book an off base hotel at the TLA rate.
The Inn at Schofield accepts pets as well see link for more info.
